Overview – Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD
The 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD (official site) is the automaker’s first fully-fledged electric car, which marks an important milestone in the company’s history. It has an all-new platform, a 75 or 98 kWh battery, and either a single motor rear-wheel drive or twin motor all-wheel drive layout. It comes with a range of up to 372 miles, and is available in a range of specs with 265-480 bhp. It also has a 5-seat interior, a hatchback boot, and a “frunk” in the nose.
The car is actually an electric crossover vehicle, with various configurations and equipment packages. It is agile and quick, with a well-appointed interior, sufficient range and capability, and Bang & Olufsen sound system. It was awarded the EV of the Year award in 2021. Ford has previously made plug-in hybrids.
DS 3 E-Tense Energy And Carbon Efficiency
The Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD has an emissions rating of 108 gCO2/mi. This is higher than the ratings of the BMW i7 xDrive60, Volkswagen ID5, and Hyundai IONIQ 6, however it is lower than the rating of the Jaguar I-Pace EV400. Based on these comparisons, we judge the Mach-E SR AWD to be on the high side of carbon emissions due to its lower efficiency.
EV Engine, Power and Performance
The Mach-E has a range of specifications and prices, from the 265 bhp rear-wheel drive to the 346 bhp all-wheel drive Extended Range model. The top-of-the-range is the 480 bhp GT version. It has a 0-62 mph time of 3.7 seconds and is faster than the 5.0-litre Mustang coupe.
The Mustang Mach-E is available in either a standard-range 70.0-kWh battery or an extended-range 91.0-kWh pack. All-wheel drive is available with 480 horsepower and up to 634 pound-feet of torque, and the GT Performance model can go from zero to 60 mph in 3.5 seconds. It has wheels ranging from 18 to 20 inches, and an optional adaptive dampers feature for adjustable ride firmness.
Interior Comfort and Cargo Dimensions
The interior has a 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen and many connectivity, apps and self-driving features. Although Ford has tried to blend past and future designs, the materials and quality aren’t top-notch, and may be disappointing to some for such an expensive car. The interior can seat up to 5 people, and has a boot and “frunk” for cargo.
The battery is located under the floor for maximum cargo and passenger space. The interior features a streamlined dashboard with a digital gauge cluster and a huge vertically mounted touchscreen. There is a flip-up armrest, customizable ambient interior lighting, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and a panoramic sunroof. There is also 29 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seats, and up to 60 with the back seats folded.
Infotainment, Tech and Connectivity
The Mach-E has a Tesla-aping 15.5-inch portrait touchscreen and many connectivity, phone mirroring, apps and self-driving features. It also has a physical knob controller, but the infotainment system may take some getting used to.
The Mustang Mach-E runs on Ford’s next-generation Sync infotainment system which includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot, and a Bang & Olufsen audio system. The software is constantly improved with over-the-air updates.
Safety Features Of The Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD
The Mach-E has automated emergency braking with forward-collision warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise control with hands-free driving mode is available as an option.
The Mach-E is well built, with no creaks or groans. It is also quick, but the artificial steering means it’s not too confidence-inspiring around corners. For those with range anxiety, it’s been shown to be quite efficient, with a range of 260 miles in cold, wet winter weather, and 240 miles on a summer’s day.
Warranty Information
Ford’s limited and powertrain warranty cover the Mach-E for three years or 36,000 miles, and five years or 60,000 miles respectively. Electrical components are covered for eight years or 100,000 miles, but complimentary maintenance is not included.
Final Thoughts – Ford Mustang Mach-E SR AWD
The Ford Mustang Mach-E is not a Mustang, and should not be considered as such. It is an electric crossover offering power and performance. It has a well-executed engine and design, a decent interior, and good tech features. However, it is a bit pricey, and the badge engineering may be a disadvantage in the long-term.
It also has excellent safety features, good range and charging capabilities, and a well-appointed and spacious interior. It is a great choice for EV enthusiasts.
